“They found that he was so driven to create that he
spent most of his money, his meager income as a Janitor,
On Having Magazine Illustrations
photographically enlarged, so he could trace them,
Because he didn't think that he was very good at
drawing. And this is fantastically moving — you know
that in the pre-Photoshop age, he had to go through this
Elaborate Process Because He Didn't Think He Was Good
at drawing.”
Grayson Perry about Henry Darger, Reith Lectures 2013
The decal design is based on the certainty of the coincidence of the object/image with the thing/image traced on the paper. It's a drawing by the designer/spectator. The dual role played by those who lend themselves to decaling an image is a media construction (of the medium, therefore ecological) that is guessed with the purpose of not altering reality, that is, the design by decal understood in this way seeks not to be a drawing, but rather the literal transcription of the same to the same. When decaling, an interval is created for the drawing action, waiting to transfer the image to a new surface — in a perfect translation (where the projection mutes the gesture).
The decal design must be the type of design that leaves those who think they are excluded from an environment where the mistake of matching the expectation with the projection is the most relaxed.
In these terms, the design by decal is always a projection, the image of expectation superimposed on the action of drawing, a manifestation of the unwanted interval.
Today I will call this product the action of designing a coincidence design by decal, where the marks on the surface conform to the designer's desire (I think it now becomes clear to the spectator to the designer). The coincidence design is the product of the coincidence of the expectation with its projection, of the replacement of the designer's gestures with a collective understanding of what the decal design is, which allows the validation of the projection and, therefore, a permanent updating of the design-image, that is, of the projected design.
Coincidence drawing occurs when a person “thinks they are not very good at drawing” — peace and quiet. It is the design that harmonizes the type transformed into a designer with their expectations and fears.
It can be seen that I am walking by leaps and bounds towards a saving outcome, the design by decal as a salvation buoy.
